Geotek Monitor: AI-Powered Groundwater and Water Infrastructure Resilience for Climate-Vulnerable Communities

About

How this project makes an impact

Geotek Water Solutions has been operating since 2022 and is dedicated to tackling water scarcity in sub-Saharan Africa through innovative groundwater exploration and smart infrastructure.

Groundwater is the backbone of daily life in rural Nigeria, supplying about 85% of domestic water in rural and peri-urban areas through boreholes and hand-pumps. Yet these systems are largely unmanaged, invisible, and highly vulnerable to climate variability. Aquifers are depleting faster than they recharge, and the absence of real-time monitoring means that governments and communities react only when wells fail or contamination spreads.

How AI drives resilience

Geotek Monitor uses AI to combine satellite images, geological maps, and local reports to track and predict water quality/security and identify communities specifically vulnerable to climate risks. Sensors on the pumps also collect data, allowing collection of fragmented hydro-climatic and groundwater data points into actionable guidance.

The funding will support resilience for over 250,000 people in climate vulnerable regions, who will gain access to safe and steady water. Pump failures and downtime will drop significantly, saving millions of hours otherwise spent collecting water and through training water technicians, the communities will manage water sustainably for the long term.

"AI is transforming how we understand and manage water in climate-vulnerable communities. At Geotek Water, we combine field experience in water monitoring/management with artificial intelligence to interpret vast hydro-climatic datasets including Aquifer levels, drought, rainfall, geology, and infrastructure performance in real time. This allows us to generate precise insights for groundwater sustainability, water Infrastructure performance, and long-term resilience. Through advanced data analytics, AI is enabling us to accurately support the siting more sustainable water systems, predict water infrastructure failures, and detect water scarcity before it becomes a crisis."
